Young Voters Wear Their Team Pride

From their own youth league jerseys to the uniforms of their favorite professional teams, students at Newbridge Road Elementary School and throughout the North Bellmore School District celebrated a special spirit day on May 28. Sports Jersey Day was the result of the annual Kids Choice Vote, hosted by the PTA Coordinating Council.
When parents came to vote during the school budget and Board of Education election on May 19, North Bellmore students were able to cast their ballot for one of five spirit days. There were 667 total votes cast, with Sports Jersey Day the clear winner with 258 votes. Nine days later, they suited up in their favorite athletic attire.
“I like sports so I wanted to vote for jersey day,” said Newbridge Road sixth grader Nina Cannistraci, who represented the Mets that day. “It’s also a great way to learn about different sports and teams.”
Sixth grader Jax Leone said Sports Jersey Day is a great conversation starter, as students bond when they discover they root for the same team. Jax wore his Knicks jersey, which was extra special for him with the team reaching the NBA finals this year.
“I’m a big sports fan,” Jax said. “I think Sports Jersey Day was the best option out of all of the choices because a bunch of people are sports fans, so there should be a special day to represent your team.”
The spirit day wasn’t just limited to students, as administrators, teachers and staff joined in the fun, as well.
