Saw Mill Sixth Graders Flourish as Nonfiction Writers

An months-long immersion into informational writing was an enjoyable experience for sixth graders at Saw Mill Road Elementary School. That’s because they got to pick topics of personal interest, then use their creativity to craft their final products.
The subjects that students selected were wide-ranging, from food and sports, to current and historical events. The nonfiction writing project began with the young authors brainstorming topics. They narrowed their ideas down to a specific focus before diving into their research using books and online sources.
Students created their final pieces, which were one or two pages, in Canva. They broke their writing down into different chapters and had to include text features such as informational boxes, headlines, charts, maps and photos with captions. They shined creatively as they worked with different colors, fonts and designs.
