Springtime Lessons Take Root at Dinkelmeyer

Spring has been on the minds of young learners at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School over the past few weeks.
In Jennifer McGovern’s kindergarten class, students studied plant life cycles and planted flower seeds and mystery seeds, which turned out to be grass. They used the bottom half of recycled water bottles as their pots. Kindergartners made predictions and wrote down their daily observations in their science journals.
Lauren LoBello’s kindergartners recently went on a nature walk around the school grounds. With clipboards in hand, students checked off each item they found on their list, such as dirt, leaves, flowers, trees, birds, butterflies and squirrels.
Second grade teacher Ellen Tournour continued a tradition by having students make their grassheads. In March, each student filled a stocking with soil and grass seed, placed it into a cup and gave it a face. They made sure their grassheads had adequate sun and water, and watched nature take its course. As they grass starting growing big, the class even had a “hair-cutting party” at the end of April.
