Read Aloud Promotes Personal Strengths at Saw Mill

“Aaron Slater, Illustrator” by Andrea Beaty was the book selection for the April principal’s read aloud at Saw Mill Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Unique about this choice was that it came from student and family suggestions.
Every month, Principal Jeffrey Rosof and Assistant Principal Daniel Madden host an assembly to read and discuss a book that has a character education message. The children’s book is about a boy with dyslexia who struggles with reading but discovers his voice through his artistic talent. Mr. Rosof and Mr. Madden read the book during a pair of programs on April 17, then engaged in dialogue with students about its theme and meaning. They also asked students to reflect on their own individual strengths.
“This story beautifully reflects our shared commitment to inclusion, perseverance and celebrating the unique strengths within each individual,” Mr. Madden said. “Through Aaron’s journey, students are reminded that challenges can be pathways to creativity, confidence and self-expression. These values that deeply align with our mission to inspire all learners to grow with courage and integrity.”
Following Pick a Reading Partner week in March, which was hosted in partnership with the PTA, students and families were asked to suggest books for the April principal’s read aloud. There was a strong response to a family survey, and “Aaron Slater, Illustrator” emerged as a popular choice.
Mr. Madden added that the read aloud served as a precursor to the upcoming Career Day, which will also be hosted in partnership with the PTA. The main character’s story highlights how passions and talents can shape future pathways, reinforcing among students that there are many ways to make a meaningful impact in the world.
