AI Emerges as Learning Tool at Saw Mill Road

With the emergence of artificial intelligence throughout society, it has become an educational resource for students at Saw Mill Road Elementary School.
Fifth grade teacher Chrissy Migliano had her students use AI for an argumentative writing project. Students copied and pasted their essays into Magic School, a district-approved AI platform, for writing feedback. Some of the suggestions were stronger introductions, the use of more quotes and spelling and punctuation fixes.
Her fifth graders also practiced their debating skills. They had to argue a topic against AI by taking a stance and using evidence to support their claims. In math, Ms. Migliano’s students have Magic School provide practice questions on different concepts such as adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions.
Brandon Rosenblatt’s fifth graders used AI for their “stuck in a snow globe” writing projects. The annual tradition took on a new spin this year with the technology enhancement. Mr. Rosenblatt created snow globe images with ChatGPT and provided students with five options. They then used AI to add pictures of themselves into the snow globes.
His students also use Magic School to get feedback for writing projects. Mr. Rosenblatt inputs his rubric into AI so it can produce targeted responses based on each assignment’s criteria. This is in addition to writing conferences with the teacher.
