Fast Feet and School Spirit at Sixth Grade Track Meet

In a coming together of the past and the future, the soon-to-be-graduates of the North Bellmore School District gathered at Mepham High School on May 22 for the annual sixth grade track meet.
For students, it was one of their final elementary activities alongside the peers they have spent the past seven years with. But it was also the first gathering of Mepham High School’s Class of 2032, with a two-year stop at Grand Avenue Middle School in between.
The track meet had all the signs of an event that looked both forward and ahead. Students sat in the bleachers by their elementary school, wearing their school’s Class of 2026 T-shirt. The track and field events, however, comprised sixth graders from each building, allowing the future middle school classmates to get to know each other better.
America’s 250th anniversary was the theme this year, with a large banner near the track entrance featuring a star for each school.
The full-day event featured 50-meter, 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter races, the latter being two times around the track. There were also 4 X 100 relay races as well as with several field events including the discus throw, javelin, long jump and shot put. Physical education teachers James Breslin, William Green, James Mulvey, Anthony Novello, Alyssa Parker and Michael Weiner coordinated the event.
