Message from the Superintendent

Dear Parents and Members of the North Bellmore Community,

Hello and Happy Summer!

I know that it is a very busy time of the year for all of us, however, I‘d like to take a moment of your time to offer an opportunity for involvement in planning a part of our district's future.

During the next several months, several committees and initiatives will be introduced to all of the members of our district and community. Currently, we are in the process of developing two important committees, Facilities Study Committee and the Key Communicators Network.

Of the two, the Facilities Study Committee is underway and will continue to meet during the summer months. The charge of this committee will be to review, in-depth, the issues surrounding our district's facilities. This committee consists of teachers, staff, administrators, parents and community representatives. I'm hoping to have representation from each school community as the recommendations of this committee may very well impact all six of our school communities.

Our first meeting was held on July 12, 2006 . Our meeting schedule for the summer follows: July 26, August 15, and August 29. All meetings will begin at 7PM and will be held in the Martin Ave. School. Please see the Facilities Planning Committee link for additional information.

What do you say? Interested? If so, please drop an e-mail to either Chris Milano or Toni Cincotta with "Facilities Planning" in the subject line.

Thanks for your anticipated participation!

Dominic Mucci
Superintendent of Schools

2006 Facilities Planning Committee

Charge of the committee:

  • Review the 2005 Building Condition Survey & Inspection Report
  • Explore the implications of current building conditions related to short (current 1-2 yrs) and long term (3 yrs to the future) facility needs.
  • Provide recommendations for consideration by the Board of Education relative to building conditions, facility needs, and recommended improvements/changes.

Nature of the Committee :

  • The committee functions in an advisory capacity to the Board of Education.
  • The committee is made up of parents, staff, administrators, community representatives, invited volunteer consultants and Board trustees.
  • Recommendations presented to the Board must be made through consensus.
  • Sub-groups will be created to collect, interpret, and present information to the larger group.
  • No minority reports of a sub-group of the committee will be considered by the Board.
  • Final recommendations to the Board of Education will include all sub-group reports.

Timeline:

It is anticipated that the Committee will present various options and/or recommendations for the Board of Education's consideration to address the short and long term facility needs of the district. This task should be completed by January 1, 2007.

Message from the Director of Facilities - District Summary

The North Bellmore School District encompasses an area of approximately 2.6 square miles. It has six school facilities, one public library, 5 garage buildings, 2 concession stands, 1 residential type structure and 1 roller hockey rink. The average age of the district's buildings is about 55 years old. The district grounds total about 61 acres. The building square footages total approximately 344,000 square ft. There are 163 classrooms district-wide plus or minus.

Most of the district facilities still operate using original building systems. Heating, electrical, plumbing, water distribution, ventilation, lighting, to name a few. Most of the interior finishes and fixtures are of original vintage, i.e., floor finishes, bathroom fixtures and finishes, classroom interior finishes, ceilings, etc. The exterior finishes of the buildings are in need of repair, i.e., pointing, lintel repair and replacement, waterproofing, etc. Site work is needed within those 61 acres, i.e., paving, concrete repair and replacement, field renovation, irrigation, etc.

There are other considerations that will have to be made. Those having to do with spatial needs, technology needs, and programmatic needs will also have to be explored as this committee develops its recommendations for the districts future.
